Luis Alberto Saldaña Soto

Güines, Mayabeque, Cuba, 1987

One of the most internationally acclaimed Cuban artists of his generation.

A gold-distinction graduate from the Provincial Academy of Fine Arts "Eduardo Abela" in San Antonio de los Baños and a member of the Cuban Writers and Artists Union (UNEAC), his work is grounded in the theme of insularity as its overarching aesthetic framework. The sea and water emerge as reflective surfaces that mirror an alternate reality — unstable, unrepeatable fragments of form captured and frozen from the flux of everyday life, rendered through the gestural language of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism as the foundational vehicle of his creative process. Photography is his first tool: with it he captures fragments of nature that he then recodes on canvas.

He grew up between the countryside and the coast of Mayabeque. As a boy he went hunting and fishing with his father, a welder who fished for a living, and they spent long hours looking out over the fields and the sea: that is where his choice of landscape as a genre began. At the Academy he studied under Dimas Bladimir González Linares, Justo Amable and Alexander Silva.

He works in series. After his first rural landscapes, he brought surrealism into images that mix land and sea (Observador observado, Utopías), and, unlike other painters of his generation in Mayabeque, gave himself over entirely to the seascape. De mares y retornos, Insulares, Piedra viva and Entropía place figures, stones and objects in the water as witnesses to island life, while Estereotipos and Transvertebrados explore the human figure. In Agua especular and Anatomía water is the only subject left: reflections, transparencies and foam painted on the edge of abstraction.

He has mounted 14 solo exhibitions and over 80 group shows across Cuba, Mexico, Venezuela, Lebanon, Peru, Chile, Panama, and the United States, earning numerous distinctions including the UNEAC Prize and the Havana Provincial Council of Visual Arts Award. His work is held in the CdeCuba collection (Valencia), in the parish church of San Julián de los Güines and in private collections in Cuba, the United States, Mexico, Spain, Italy, France, England, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Russia, Colombia, Venezuela, Panama, Brazil, Canada and Australia. He lived and worked in Caracas from 2011 to 2013; since 2018 he has been represented by Arte1010 Gallery in Mérida, Mexico, and in 2023 Cuba's National Council of Visual Arts selected him to paint, with the American muralist Robert Wyland, an ocean-conservation mural at the National Aquarium of Cuba. Since moving to the United States in 2024, after an artist residency at the Expressiones Cultural Center in New London, Connecticut, he has lived and worked in Miami Lakes, Florida, and has participated in major art venues including Art Miami and the Mystic Museum of Art. In 2026 CdeCuba Art Books published his book Selected Works 2004–2026, with texts by Tomás Sánchez, David Mateo, Píter Ortega and Daniel Granja Peniche.
